Maratoto track re-opened, but with conditions
Vehicles and equipment must be thoroughly cleaned beforehand, to prevent spread of Kauri Dieback

Whether the Maratoto track would reopen this summer or not has been in question. DOC are concerned about Kauri Dieback disease, and making sure it is not spread to the Maratoto area.

John Hickey, president of the NZFWDA northern zone, has informed us that DOC have signed off on reopneing the Maratoto track from the 26th of December 2015, provided that users make sure that all vehicles, equipment and footwear are throughly cleaned of all visible soil. Please clean everything before going to the Maratoto track, and as soon as posible after leaving.

From DOC:

To reduce the risk of Kauri Dieback, we would appreciate it if all users comply with guidelines and notices issued by the Kauri Dieback Programme (lead by Ministry of Primary Industry) to prevent and avoid the spread of the pest organism Phytophthora taxon Agathis (PTA) Kauri Dieback Diseas as specified by the website http://www.kauridieback.co.nz/. The clubs and their members must comply with the relveant guidelines as specified on http://www.kauridieback.co.nz/publications.

It is important that all users of this track ensure that all vehicles and equipment are thoroughly cleaned of all visible soil and that footware once cleaned is sprayed with a high quality cleaning agent.

DOC is also concerned about vehicles driving into we areas, e.g. puddles and rivers, and how that could affect the spreading of Kauri Dieback. Please do your best to make sure that you do not do anything that might result in the spread of this disease into Maratoto.

The $10 per 4wd track fee can be paid by direct credit to NZFWDA Northern Zone, 02 0400 0217946 00 (use MARATOTO as reference), or by cash into the honesty box
