|
Take note of the trip grading at bottom of this page to see if your vehicle and driving experience is appropriate for the trip.
Check with the trip organiser!
Most, if not all trips into the bush will have overhanging bush and the possibility of damage if driven carelessly or in wet weather (this changes very fast).
Scratches on shiny vehicles are always a possibility due to the nature of 4 wheel driving in the bush. |
Trip Gradings |

experience required. Road tyres are acceptable.
- Easy – Little or no four wheel driving experience required. All terrain tyres, front and rear recovery

Front and rear recovery points (rated), basic recovery gear (snatch strap, 2 rated shackles and
gloves), and appropriate driver knowledge. Winch and full recovery gear is preferred.
- Extreme – Very steep, deeply rutted tracks or rock hopping will be encountered. Front and rear
recovery points (rated), full recovery gear (snatch strap, rated shackles, tree trunk protector,
winch extension, drag chain and gloves), and appropriate driver knowledge.

42nd Traverse
|
This Track is open from 1 st December to April 31st. During the summer months for 4WD use.
Please respect this track and do not venture off the main track as this is a DoC requirement to help keep this track open for public use.
The DoC Kiwi breeding team access the nest sites via these sidetracks. You will see vehicle tracks on them but please refrain from using them!
This is a Kiwi Breeding area, so NO dogs and please no driving at night when birds are active! |
Please help to keep this track open for 4wd use and do not use over the wet winter months to avoid track damage.
It remains open for mountain bikes, motorbikes & trampers, all year.
This does not seem very FAIR for 4WD drivers considering it is the 4WD clubs who are the only user group doing the maintenance & track clearing work with DoC!
Doc Info about the 42nd Traverse
|
The Taupo 4WD Club organises a trip every year to help to clear the track.
Help is always appreciated. This is also a great time to visit the area and meet new people from other clubs throughout the North Island.
Keep a watch on the "What's On" listing above for the next clean up trip.

Maratoto Track
aka
Wires Track
Please note that this track has become rougher over the 2009 winter and Mud tyres and groups of at least two vehicles are recommended for recoveries.
Show room standard 4WD's on road tyres should not enter this track as you will get light scratches and will not be able to drive this track unaided.
|
Track is NOW OPEN from 13 Nov 2009
DO NOT forget to donate $10 towards the maintenance of this track.
This track is closed over the winter months to help control damage from vehicles and water erosion. This is in accordance with the DoC management plan.
Please pay $10.00 toward the maintenance of this great track. This includes motor bikes as this user group never helps in the maintance work!
There is a yellow box on the corner of Maratoto Rd & the Wires Rd. It's to help pay for the equipment to control water erosion and clear landslips for your continued use. Without this work by a small group of enthusiasts DoC would close this track for good!
|
Phone 027 5242132 for recorded message regarding the status of the track. Check before you travel there.
Note that the track may be closed at any time due to wet weather!
Working parties are planned in the summer to help keep this track open. Contact Peter Vahry mailto:peter.vahry@xtra.co.nz

The Loop Track
This track is not for the faint hearted.
Inexperienced and ill-equiped 4WD's should not attempt this track.
The Loop track is only sutiable for tough/rough trucks as it is an extreme track.
Damage is to be expected!
I have produced a DVD of a club trip through the loop and is for sale at a cost of $15.00 to cover costs. It is 20 minutes long.
It gives a idea of the conditions when dry.

Stadia Track
|
There is now a locked wire barrier across the entrance to the Stadia trail to manage access.
Please note that the track is on private land and a $25.00 fee is to be paid to the land owners. Visit the NZFWDA web site for info. www.nzfwda.org.nz
|
Major earthworks to allow access for power pole maintenance have made the lower half of the track suitable for shiny trucks but the top half remains tough and is only for winch equipped vehicles. There are few mud holes at present and the aim is to maintain that standard.

Whangamomona Road
|
The Whangamomona Road will be closed to 4x4 use during the winter from June 1 to September 30 by the road management committee. This is to stop unnessary damage to the track during the winter.
Please observe this voluntary closure. |
There was a large slip about 3/4 of the way in the track. I have since been told that the track is now opened but could be a tight squeeze past.
There is a large overhanging slab of Papa rock above the slip, which threatens to fall at any time on to the track thus extreme caution is required when driving under it!
(updated 01.01.10). |
I have been told that driving this track in wet conditions is VERY dangerious due to the very steep terrain, slippery ground conditions and the drop-offs at the road edge to the river below. |

Visit the TECT All Terrain Park web site keep you up to speed on a unique development that has the potential to become one of New Zealand's premier venues for active outdoor recreation - the TECT All Terrain Park.
Some 1261 hectares of land, largely comprising forestry and native bush, in between Tauranga and Rotorua was purchased by the Western Bay of Plenty District Council and Tauranga City Council with the support of naming rights sponsor TECT (Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust) in 2004. Bay Community Trust provided initial loan facilities to Councils for the capital purchase of the proposed Park. An additional 385 hectares of land was brought by the councils in 2006. |
At this stage plans are underway to develop the park in stages over the next two decades. This staged development will allow different areas of the park to be developed over time to cater for a range of active and passive recreational activities including mountain biking, rallying, motocross, firearm sports, 4x4, equestrian, tramping, angling and orienteering.
The first stage of development involves the councils working with potential users to ensure their needs are built into a development plan for the park. The development plan will provide the blueprint for future development including details of the type, timing and scale of activities and required infrastructure such as public access roads.
It is anticipated that initial activities will get underway at the TECT All Terrain Park in 2009. |
